What Is the simple present tense?

The simple present tense is used to talk about habits, general truths, repeated actions, and fixed arrangements. It is one of the most commonly used tenses in the English language.

The simple present tense is used to express:

a) Habits or routines

Examples: She drinks coffee every morning.

b) General truths or facts

Examples: The sun rises in the east.

c) Fixed schedules

Examples: The train leaves at 6 PM.

d) Feelings, opinions, and states

Examples: I love music.

Structure of the Simple Present Tense:

a) Affirmative Sentences (Positive)

I / You / We / They + base verb

Examples: They teach English..

He / She / It + base verb + -s / -es

Examples: She teaches English.


Spelling Rules for -s/-es:

Most verbs: add -s

Examples: work → works, run → runs

Verbs ending in -s, -sh, -ch, -x, -o: add -es

Examples: watch → watches, go → goes

Verbs ending in consonant + -y: change -y to -ies

Examples: study → studies, try → tries


b) Negative Sentences

I / You / We / They + do not (don’t) + base verb

Examples: They don’t teach English.

He / She / It + does not (doesn’t) + base verb

Examples: She doesn’t teach English.


b) Questions (Interrogative Sentences)

Do + I / you / we / they + base verb

Examples: Do they teach English?

Does + he / she / it + base verb

Examples: Does he teach English.

always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never

Examples: He always brushes his teeth before bed.

every day / week / month / year

Examples: It changes every year.

on Mondays, in the morning, at night

Examples: It opens at 8 in the morning.
